Melbourne “Burn” Aquino’s lettering abstractions is a painstaking process of painting a collage until it blurs the line between form and craft. This style, which he has developed through the years, is rooted in a particular moment in his teenage years when he was employed by a politician to paste election posters on walls. Competing parties would  scrape off the posters that he put up, and the layers of torn paper, torn colors, and torn words had mesmerized him. This would later become his signature style: acrylic paintings that mimic discarded advertisements, fading promises, and unfinished stories.

PornOgraphic is Burn’s first one-man show after representing the Philippines in the XIth edition Florence Biennale in Florence, Italy. This is his act of arousing curiosity and quick, intense, graphic emotions; the pornography of politics, power, and silence.

Nothing is ever really hidden in pornography; and in PornOgraphic, you unwittingly become the voyeur, while the artist is very much the willing subject.
